When Should Your Child Have an Eye Exam?
Children should have vision checks at regular well-child visits starting in infancy, with formal screenings around ages 3, 4, and 5. After age 5, screening is typically recommended every 1–2 years, or sooner if their eye doctor advises it.
Schedule a comprehensive eye exam sooner at any age if a child squints, sits very close to screens, has frequent headaches, struggles with reading, has eyes that drift or do not line up, fails a vision screening, or has a family history of significant eye problems.
Not every symptom means a child needs glasses. An exam helps determine whether the concern stems from a prescription, a focusing problem, an eye alignment issue, irritation, or another cause.
