Halloween contact lenses, also known as cosmetic or decorative contact lenses, are a popular way to enhance a costume by dramatically changing the appearance of the eyes. From vampire-red irises to cat-like pupils, these special-effect lenses can add a striking touch to any Halloween look. However, despite being worn for cosmetic purposes, Halloween contacts are still medical devices, and they come with serious health risks if not used properly.
Halloween Contact Lenses Require a Prescription
Even though cosmetic contact lenses are not intended to correct vision, they must still be prescribed and properly fitted by a licensed eye care professional. Wearing unregulated or ill-fitting decorative lenses can lead to painful and dangerous complications, including corneal infections, scratches, and even permanent vision loss.
A prospective study in France found that wearing decorative contact lenses increased the risk of microbial keratitis, a potentially blinding corneal infection, by 16 times. (Sauer A, Bourcier T; Acta Ophthalmol. 2011 Aug;89(5):e439-42)
This makes it especially important for teens and young adults, the most frequent users of Halloween contacts, to understand the potential dangers.
Decorative Contact Lenses Are Regulated by Law
Under U.S. federal law passed in 2005, contact lenses—including cosmetic and Halloween lenses—are classified as medical devices. This means they can only be sold with a valid prescription by a licensed provider. Many popular decorative lenses, such as circle lenses, often sold online, are not FDA-approved and may be distributed illegally.
To stay safe, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the following guidelines for using Halloween contact lenses:

Risks of Unsafe Halloween Contacts

A multi-site U.S. study (2018–2021) found that while no specific contact lens type or material was linked to a higher risk of developing bacterial keratitis, certain factors significantly influenced the severity of the disease. Among contact lens wearers who developed keratitis, those using reusable lenses and current smokers were more likely to experience severe infections, while those wearing daily disposable lenses had a lower risk of severe outcomes. These results highlight that although lens type may not affect the likelihood of infection, it can impact how serious the infection becomes.
If any symptoms occur after wearing Halloween contacts, it’s essential to remove the lenses immediately and seek care from an ophthalmologist.
Prioritize Your Eye Safety
Every Halloween season, eye doctors report cases of preventable eye infections caused by unregulated or improperly used cosmetic contact lenses. In trying to enhance their costume, some individuals unintentionally harm their eyes—sometimes permanently.
