Honoring The Life and Legacy of Dr. David Dulaney

Phoenix, Arizona – December 11, 2013

Dr. David Dulaney, MD | Founder of Barnet Dulaney Perkins It is with deep sorrow that Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center announces the passing of David Dulaney, MD, one of the founding partners of the practice and a pioneering leader in ophthalmology.

Dr. Dulaney devoted his career to transforming lives through advanced vision care. He believed deeply in potential—the potential of emerging technologies to improve outcomes and the potential of people to grow, innovate, and lead. Although he retired from clinical practice in 2006, his influence continued to shape the practice and the many individuals who had the privilege of working alongside him.

A true visionary, Dr. Dulaney consistently pushed the boundaries of what was possible in ophthalmology. He was among the first ophthalmologists in the United States to perform LASIK at a time when most of the country was still focused on PRK. His early adoption of refractive surgery began after traveling to Bogotá, Colombia, where he observed the use of a microkeratome. Shortly thereafter, he purchased the first microkeratome in the United States and began performing automated lamellar keratoplasty (ALK), the precursor to modern LASIK.

Dr. Dulaney was also one of the earliest investigators to use implantable contact lenses, beginning as early as 1996—nearly a decade before FDA approval. He was the first ophthalmologist to perform a procedure using the WaveLight Allegretto laser when it was introduced in the United States for clinical trials. His career included numerous other firsts, including becoming the first ophthalmologist in Arizona to use a YAG laser and being among the first in the state to develop an ambulatory surgery center dedicated to eye care.

His commitment to innovation extended to cataract surgery as well, where he championed advances such as clear corneal incisions and other techniques that improved patient safety and recovery. The scope of Dr. Dulaney’s contributions is vast, and his impact on the field of ophthalmology continues to be recognized both nationally and internationally.

The Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center family is forever grateful for Dr. Dulaney’s ability to see potential in people, his foresight into the benefits of advanced technologies, his relentless pursuit of better patient experiences, and his unwavering devotion to patient care.
