What to Expect from Cataract Surgery

What happens at your pre-operative visit?

At your pre-operative visit, we will evaluate your eyes and determine which cataract surgery option you may be a good candidate for. Everyone’s eyes and visual needs are different. You will learn about your eyes and vision, Advanced technology, and have all your questions answered by your personal AVP surgery coordinator and doctor.

What happens during cataract surgery?

Our AVP surgeons have performed thousands of cataract surgeries and are among the most experienced in the country. The procedure is usually painless and takes between 10-20 minutes. The cataract is removed and a clear intraocular lens (IOL) implant is then inserted into the capsular sac, correcting your vision.

What should you expect after surgery?

Most patients find that after cataract surgery they experience an overall higher quality of life. They not only see more clearly but also see colors better and are able to more easily perform their favorite tasks. Detailed eye care instructions will be provided to you after your surgery. It is normal to experience mild discomfort, itching, and light sensitivity but these should disappear within a few days.

Options for Advanced Technology

An important part of your cataract education and consultation process will be understanding and selecting important technology options available at Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center that will affect your surgery experience and your vision after cataract surgery. We will discuss your visual goals and customize a cataract surgery plan that will best fit your expectations considering your needs, lifestyle and personality.

Multifocal Lens

Where a standard lens provides vision at a single distance, an advanced technology lens such as a multifocal IOL, will be the best choice if you want to maximize your ability to focus at varying distances while minimizing your dependency on glasses. If you are active and are inhibited by wearing glasses, multifocal lenses are a premium option that can accommodate you and your favorite activities.

Toric Lens

Those with astigmatism (irregular shape of the cornea that requires glasses for correction), may elect for a lens that addresses astigmatism providing natural distance vision. The most advanced method of distance correction uses a lens called a toric lens. The toric lens incorporates unique optics to compensate for specific deficiencies in your vision.

Trifocal Lens

Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center is proud to provide a solution for patients with presbyopia with the recent FDA approval of Alcon’s Acrysof IQ PanOptix Trifocal IOL. With this advanced technology, the trifocal lens will allow cataract and refractive lens exchange patients to correct for immediate, near, and distance vision. Prior to this advanced lens, all multifocal lenses in the United States only corrected vision at two distances.
