Dr. Robert D. Spruance is a veteran having served in both the Navy and Army. During his active duty in the Navy, he was assigned to the Ophthalmology Clinic at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital Virginia and in his subsequent Army Reserve career, served active duty assignments at the William Beaumont Army Hospital Texas and the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Germany.
Prior to joining Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center, Dr. Spruance completed a 34 year career with the Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System where he served as the Program Director of Optometry for 30 years. Throughout his career, Dr. Spruance maintained academic appointments at The Ohio State University College of Optometry, Marshall B. Ketchum University College of Optometry, and SUNY College of Optometry providing clinical training for optometry externs and residents. He also served as a Clinical Board Examiner for National Board of Examiners in Optometry, participated in clinical trials and other research, the results of which have been published in medical literature and served as consultant to the VA’s Southwestern healthcare network, which provides care to nearly 300,000 veterans. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the Southern Arizona Optometry Society.
