Welcome Sushma Rai, MD, specializing in Treatment for Glaucoma and Cataract Surgery

DrSushmaRai PHOENIX (Feb. 4, 2015) – Leading researcher and educator, Dr. Sushma Rai has joined the ophthalmology team of Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center, a leading provider of advanced vision care and surgery. Dr. Rai specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and cataract surgery. She will work in Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center clinics across the Valley.

Dr. Rai joined Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center from the University of Nebraska where she served as director of the university’s Glaucoma Fellowship Program and co-director of the Glaucoma Service at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences for six years. Before serving as director of the Glaucoma Fellowship Program, she trained future ophthalmologists as assistant professor for two years. She has been called upon to deliver lectures to colleagues around the country and is an advocate for raising glaucoma awareness.

“Glaucoma is often termed the ‘sneak thief of sight’ and hence we need to raise more awareness,” said Dr. Rai. “Regular eye exams provide early detection and can help preserve vision. This in turn leads to achieving the ultimate goal which is maximizing the quality of life.”

She has participated in research evaluating new diagnostic and surgical devices for the treatment of glaucoma. She will perform surgical treatments for glaucoma and cataract surgery, including micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), a new procedure for glaucoma patients who are considering cataract surgery.

“Dr. Rai has dedicated her career to caring for patients as well as conducting research that has helped to improve the care provided by ophthalmologists,” said Mark Rosenberg, CEO of Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center. “Her experience is a great asset for the Phoenix community.”
