Treatment Option for Patients with Keratoconus

Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center continues expand the treatment of eye disease with new indications for technology. We have has used Intacs (intrastromal corneal ring segments from Addition Technology, Inc.) for some time to treat nearsightedness, and now we are using Intacs to treat keratoconus. Intacs are a new option for those patients with keratoconus whose vision cannot be corrected with contact lenses or glasses alone and those patients who cannot tolerate them.

Intacs are small ring segments made out of PMMA, a plastic similar to Plexiglass. These small rings are implanted into the cornea via channels created by a Laser. The procedure is outpatient with a quick recovery. Many patients choose Intacs when they would like to treat their keratoconus but want to avoid a transplant.
