The 12 Days of LASIK

Blog, LASIK  |

Day 12.  Share Your Experience:   We recommended these twelve steps to LASIK. But we also know that everyone goes through a unique decision making process with consideration of changing their life through LASIK. Focusing on quality care, experienced doctors and the latest technology combined with your own personal expectations. Sharing your experience with others could help to change someone’s life. Not to mention it is the greatest compliment we can receive.

Day 11.  Live Your Life:   Many patients return to work within a day or two of their LASIK procedure. From there, they enjoy the things people without glasses or contacts may take for granted, like seeing the alarm clock in the morning, watching TV in bed and enjoying your favorite activities.

Day 10.  One Day Post Operative Care:  Most LASIK patients notice dramatic visual results within the first few days following their procedure. However, the speed of recovery depends on personal healing patterns. Follow-up care and eye medication are just as important to your results as the procedure itself. One day following your LASIK procedure, you will have a post operative exam. During this exam a doctor will take a look to make sure your LASIK procedure is healing and test your new vision.

Day 9.  Day of LASIK Procedure:  LASIK is an outpatient procedure. The procedure itself takes approximate 10-15 minutes. On the day of your LASIK procedure, you should arrive as rested and relaxed as possible. You should expect to bring someone with you to drive you home. Each LASIK procedure is customized to meet the vision goals of each patient. The type of LASIK surgery will differ slightly for those with different vision challenges.

Day 8.  LASIK is Affordable:  There are a variety of ways to make LASIK affordable. Comparing the cost of LASIK over a period of time even makes it more cost effective in the long term. Insurance benefits may vary from one health insurance plan to the next, but some plans to include a LASIK benefit. Flexible Spending Accounts are also a way to save on LASIK with pre-tax dollars. There are even financing options available through Care Credit.

Day 7.  Know and Understand Your Options:  While LASIK is a great option to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, it is not for everyone. Beyond LASIK, the Vision ICL, or Implantable Contact Lens, allows you to achieve High Definition Vision, without many of the side effects associated with LASIK.  The ICL works with your natural lens inside your eye to correct your vision. Should your prescription change over time, the lens is removable and replaceable to maintain your vision options. This procedure may be ideal for patients who are not candidates for LASIK due to higher levels of nearsightedness.

Day 6.  Schedule Your LASIK Consultation:  Now its time for your comprehensive LASIK consultation. This is when the doctor takes a look at the overall health of your eye and determines your refractive error. During this consultation your doctor will confirm your candidacy for LASIK, explain the procedure and help answer any additional questions you may have in order to make an informed decision if LASIK is right for you. If for any reason, you are deemed not a candidate for LASIK, there are alternatives available, such as the Implantable Contact Lens or Refractive Lens Exchange, both excellent options that may provide you with a better result based on your vision needs.

Day 5.  Technology Does Make a Difference. There are things to be considered in regards to  technology to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. LASIK procedures use a highly specialized excimer laser to correct refractive errors and reshape the cornea to improve vision. The technology used in LASIK surgery has evolved over the past few years. Newer generation lasers such as the German Engineered Allegretto Laser, preserve the natural shape of your cornea. This helps to reduce the risk of glare and halos. Topography guided LASIK, or otherwise known as “Contoura Vision”,  is a new approach to LASIK. Contoura Vision is the LASIK option most likely to give you clear vision without glasses or contact lenses. It’s the option that is the most personalized to your eye.

Day 4.  Surgeon Experience. The success of your LASIK procedure depends on several factors including the expertise of the surgeon and sophistication of the technology. With so many options, its important to take the time to do your research. The choice of surgeon should focus on the quality of his or her education and the amount of experience, as well as a welcome reputation. The primary objective is to provide you with the best results, the greatest degree of safety and some of the most advanced technology.

Day 2.  Find out if you may be a candidate for LASIK. LASIK is a procedure to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. However, LASIK is not for everyone.  To be a potential candidate for LASIK, you must be at least 18 years old, in good general health, and have good eye health with no diseases such as keratoconus, cataracts or glaucoma. Our on-line LASIK Self Evaluation is a quick 8 question survey that can help us determine if you may be a good candidate for LASIK and help rule out if you are not. If deemed a possible candidate, a thorough vision evaluation with your eye doctor, along with identifying your expectations and vision goals,  can determine which treatment is right for you.
