As technology advances in the field of vision correction, patients have an abundance of options to choose from. Laser vision correction, available at our many Arizona offices, is one of the most popular alternatives to glasses and contact lenses. Though LASIK eye surgery is a great choice for many of our Phoenix-area patients, the doctors at Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center understand that the procedure is not right for everyone. As a result, our practice offers a number of vision correction techniques, including PRK and implantable lenses, which are designed to complement each of our patients' unique needs.
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, is the eye surgery often chosen for its reliability and permanent results. When we perform this type of laser vision correction at our Arizona offices, the surgeon uses a laser to create a thin flap in your cornea. A different laser is then used to reshape your cornea so that light focuses more precisely on the retina. After reshaping has taken place, the corneal flap is put back and surgery is complete.
As laser vision correction technology develops, LASIK eye surgery at our practices in Phoenix and throughout Arizona has become faster, safer, and more predictable. We are proud to offer the latest innovations in LASIK to our laser vision correction candidates. The ALLEGRETTO WAVE® laser provides the smoothest cornea correction available, while the IntraLase® laser replaces the microkeratome usually used to create corneal flaps. In some cases, LASIK eye surgery isn't the best laser vision correction choice. Some of our patients in Phoenix and throughout Arizona may not be optimal candidates for LASIK because their corneas are too thin. Fortunately, they can still enjoy the benefits of laser vision correction by undergoing a procedure called PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy.
PRK works by reshaping the cornea with a laser, just as in the LASIK eye surgery procedure. The only difference between the two techniques is that PRK does not require the creation of a corneal flap. Instead, a laser is applied to the surface of the cornea itself. Read more about PRK and whether it might be right for you.
Implantable lenses, long used for treatment of cataracts, have finally been made available for patients who need only vision correction. Rather than changing the shape of the cornea as in LASIK eye surgery, implantable lenses are placed inside the eye to enhance the focusing abilities of the eye's natural lens. Should your prescription change, the lens is replaceable to maintain your vision for years to come.
The Visian ICL™, or implantable contact lens, can correct moderate to severe myopia, or nearsightedness, as well as moderate astigmatism. This type of treatment is an excellent choice for patients who are not good candidates for laser vision correction. Read more about the Visian ICL™.
